Ihlara Valley Canyon Hike

Cut deep into the earth by the Melendiz River over millions of years, the Ihlara Valley is Cappadocia's most dramatic gorge — a 14-kilometre canyon with walls rising up to 150 metres above a river lined with poplars and willows. Carved into these cliffs are over a hundred Byzantine rock churches, many still preserving vivid 10th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes in extraordinary detail. Our guided walk follows the river floor through the most scenic section, passing through the village of Selime with its impressive monastery complex carved directly into a volcanic mountain.
